It’s been barely two days since it went on air, but TV quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati’s latest season has already got its first crorepati.
Manoj Singh Raina, an assistant in Indian Railways, posted in Udhampur district of Jammu & Kashmir, wins a crore in the episode that airs tonight. “My life has changed. For me, more than money, it was the fact that I met and hugged Amitabh ji (actor Amitabh Bachchan, the show’s host) that I won’t forget throughout my life.
Everyone can earn money, how many can meet Mr Bachchan?” says the 44-year-old, who wanted to participate in the show since it started in the year 2000.
“I sat next to the telephone day and night for three months, expecting a call but didn’t make it. There is no newspaper in the remote village, Sangaldan, where I am posted, so to prepare for this season, I tried my best to be well-versed in current affairs by asking people around,” he says.
Raina, who draws a monthly salary of R 45,000, has a nine-year-old son and says he will build a house for his family in Chowgam, his ancestral village in Kashmir.
